When Dmitri Payet signed for West Ham, fans were inevitably ecstatic and rightfully so. He has been one of the best players in the French Ligue 1 over the past five years, constantly at the top of the assist charts and performing many tricks along the way. But other than his creativity, Payet has brought a different aspect to the Londoners’ play. Throughout the Sam Allardyce reign, West Ham, although efficient, were too functional and played too often in a negative way. With Payet in the team, there will certainly be more moments of aestheticism witnessed by the Hammers faithful this season, as in evidence on Monday evening. Along with two well taken goals, he was a torment down the flank all night with his silky skills and exceptional close control. At £10.5 million, Payet well turn out to be the bargain of the season.
