For the sixth consecutive time, Sunderland has emerged victorious in the Tyne-Wear Derby as a 3-0 win over arch rivals Newcastle earned the Black Cats their first win of the season, moving them above their rivals in the league table.

Penalty and red card the turning point

Newcastle appeared to be in control of proceedings before what can only be described as a controversial decision from referee Robert Madley completely changed the course of the match. Magpies skipper Fabricio Coloccini appeared to foul Steven Fletcher in the box. If the penalty decision was controversial, Madley’s decision to dismiss the Argentine only escalated tensions. Adam Johnson calmly drove his penalty past Rob Elliot and proceeded to run the length of the pitch and direct his celebrations toward the visiting Newcastle fans. From this point there was only going to be one winner as a goal from Billy Jones and an excellently hit volley from Steven Fletcher made sure of the points for the Black Cats.
