A quiet Messi on his big day

Barcelona’s main man should have had a night to remember. He became the youngest person to reach 100 appearances in Champions League history in Rome, but Messi had a game to forget.

Although going close in the second half, with a chipped shot which came back off the bar, the Argentinian captain failed to assert his usual dominance on proceedings. Messi played much deeper than normal, looking to create rather than score.

He came up against De Rossi and co. who denied Barca any space in the final third. Much more will come from Messi but it was not a great start to the little man’s quest for a fifth European crown.
