Southampton will miss the defensive contribution of Morgan Schneiderlin

Southampton had the second best defence in the EPL last year narrowly behind the champions Chelsea, conceding just 33 goals in 38 games. Letting two goals through in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle is therefore a disappointing opening effort by Koeman’s men and one of the team’s best assets last year, Morgan Schneiderlin, is now plying his trade in Manchester. Schneiderlin has been one of the best defensive minded midfielders in the EPL and formed a strong midfield partnership with Victor Wanyama, a void which the Dutch manager needs to fill. Jordy Clasie, the intended replacement, did not play this weekend.
