Do Monchengladbach have a penalty problem?

After surrendering three spot kicks to Sevilla in the Champions League a week ago, Die Fohlen conceded another two here, and almost allowed an improbable Augsburg comeback to take place in the process. With Granit Xhaka at needless fault for the second, it might be wise of Andre Schubert to try and give his team some rationale over tackling in the box. Yann Sommer is a reliable stopper, and nearly saved the first penalty this game, and Gladbach’s players should trust him on instinct rather than challenging rashly to prevent a shit. However, plaudits must go to Verhaegh for his ruthless dispatch of both spot kicks.

Bundesliga table getting cosy at the bottom

With Gladbach’s first win of the season and Ausburg suffering their fourth loss, just three points now separate 14th and 18th places on the table. With a number of teams now struggling, this zone could remain tight for the rest of the season, meaning results will be more important than ever. Gladbach in particular will be keen to remove themselves from this area with some more positive showings, however, for the others around, life may not be that easy.
