Borussia Monchengladbach moved off the bottom of the Bundesliga table overnight, with a blistering first 20 minutes leading to a 4-2 home win over FC Augsburg.

Gladbach’s first points for the season followed an early goal from Fabian Johnson, before Granit Xhaka, Lars Stindl and Mahmoud Dahoud all scored in the space of four minutes to cap an incredible opening period to the match. The home side had chances aplenty, but were unable to convert further and pulses increased in the second-half as Augsburg won themselves two penalties for Paul Verhaegh to coolly convert.

The result was made all the more important following the departure of manager Lucien Favre during the week. Despite the insistence of the club that he was still wanted as manager, Favre’s personal decision sent shockwaves through the Foals, and saw the appointing of under-23 Coach Andre Schubert to the temporary post.

The decision of Favre surprised many fans, who still saw the Swiss as the man to lead them out of the rut and back to their former ways. However, on the basis of this performance, there is a large scope for optimism around Borussia-Park at the moment, and heading into this weekend’s clash with fellow stragglers Stuttgart, Schubert will be able to feel the support of the fans behind him.
