Galaxy back on the scoresheet, on top of MLS too

Soccer Sunday’s final game saw the LA Galaxy return to winning ways and moreover to the top of the Supporters Shield race with a hard fought 3-2 victory over a determined FC Dallas side.

The Galaxy, who had surprisingly headed in to the crunch match-up without finding the back of the net in their last three domestic encounters, benefitted heavily from breaking their hoodoo early with a goal from Mexican star Gio Dos Santos.

Indeed, all three of Bruce Arena’s attacking DP’s found the net on Sunday night, with both Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard also on the scoresheet, as coach Bruce Arena achieved a new career milestone of the most wins with a single MLS franchise.

The performance in itself, however, continues to leave open the same questions with respect to LA’s title aspirations this season. Despite fielding a first choice XI for the sixth time in the last seven games, the Galaxy demonstrated an (continued) alarming vulnerability at the back, with the likes of Leonardo, Omar Gonzalez and veteran keeper Donovan Ricketts all looking well off the pace.

With the playoffs more so than the Supporters Shield owing more to firepower and form than overall quality in itself, the Galaxy may well still make it as the first to six and therefore defend their title. But the smart money would hold-off on placing any bets in the near future at least.
