Giovinco sets single record as TFC put the ghost of Chicago to bed

Despite a brace from old boy Gilberto, Toronto FC overcame the Chicago Fire on route to a crucial 3-2 victory that further affirms their playoff intentions.

As has been the case for numerous fixtures, Seba Giovinco carried his team to their hard earned three points and in the process set a new MLS single season record for combined goals and assists, surpassing the previous record of 34 (27 goals seven assists) held by Chris Wondolowski.

Giovinco’s second assist, for what was ultimately the game winning goal by Jozy Altidore, came in the 79th minute. This was after Chicago had twice taken the lead earlier in the contest.

The result is a much needed boost as TFC chase the playoffs, also serving as confirmation that the dismal Chicago Fire are the first team officially eliminated from the post season competition.
