Archie Thompson still has a part to play in Melbourne Victory’s 2015-16 after last night’s 2-1 win over Gamba Osaka.

The veteran striker had previously announced that he would leave the A-League club at the end of this season, however, he still found the mark as the Victory progressed through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Thompson’s 16th minute goal gave Kevin Muscat’s side an invaluable two-goal buffer, with the 37-year-old still proving he can step up for the vital moments.

“In the context of it, qualifying for the next round, that was the most important thing, surviving another guillotine and creating some more history,” said Thompson

“It was just a relief, it was my second goal this season, so for me it was beautiful.”

“It’s massive, it was our fifth campaign and last time we just missed out…tonight was perfect, they’re a great team no matter who they send.

There was no shortage of support at AAMI Park and with the possibility of this being their icon’s last match, the Victory fans clearly wanted to make it a special occasion.

“It’s amazing, I think all night they were screaming,” said Thompson.

“That was very special, I said the other day the chants are one thing I’m going to miss.”

“I kept it together, unfortunately my kids and wife could not be here tonight…but I had my mum, siblings and friends, so that was great.

“I think they made me less emotional because I think they probably cried enough for me,”

With an effort it is clear that Thompson will be fighting until his last seconds wearing a Victory shirt.

“Broxy [Broxham] told me I have more farewells than John Farnham…I’m not sure what that meant, but it sounded good.”

The Victory’s round of 16 opponents will be decided after this week’s fixtures are completed.
