Explosive opening between Glory and Phoenix fizzles out

Two goals in the opening 10 minutes saw the clash between two sides who suffered first up defeats kick off in sensational fashion and  though the stage was set for an engaging 90 minutes, the match dissolved into a scrappy affair. The Glory were first to strike in the seventh minute when Gyorgy Sandor put away a Mitchell Oxborrow corner, but the Phoenix replied two minutes later as Roy Krishna’s feet were too quick for Michael Thwaite. From this point on, both sides struggled to produce fluent football as though both teams needed to win, neither could afford to lose. Eventually the Phoenix prevailed in a game that highlighted the fact that the Glory and Nix alike have early season issues to iron out.

Phoenix punish 10-man opposition at the second time of asking

After falling to the 10 men of Newcastle last week at home, the Phoenix were not about to drop points for a second consecutive week against opposition with a man fewer. Once again the Phoenix had the better of play and chances when Richard Garcia received a second yellow card in the 84th minute. The Nix pounced, with unlikely outlet Vince Lia stroking in an 89th-minute winner. The Phoenix will be pleased with three points from the ‘Distance Derby’ and will take some confidence into a clash against the early pace setters Brisbane in round three.
