City through to the round of 16

Manuel Pellegrini will be understandably elated with his side’s performance as he can now start preparing for the next stage of the competition. Juventus’ draw against Monchengladbach meant that the Italian club now have eight points from four games, while City lead the table with nine. Sevilla and Gladbach have three and two points respectively, meaning the Sky Blues are guaranteed qualification. They will now look to ensure that they finish top of their group, ahead of the second place Bianconeri, the two sides will facing-off once again on Matchday six. City will host Monchengladbach prior to that, while Juventus visit Sevilla. If The Old Lady are to lose in Spain and City manage to take maximum points, it will guarantee the English side finishes at the top of the Group.

Where does Sevilla stand?

It was a harsh night for the Red and Whites, who were not poor at all during the match, it was just that City were far too good. Unai Emery’s side might have thought that they would be able to claw themselves back after going down by two goals in the opening 10 minutes, having numerous chances in the first-half and arguably they should have been awarded a penalty as well.

Sevilla still stand the chance to qualify for the Round of 16 but to achieve that, they must win their remaining two fixtures, while Juventus must also lose theirs. It is not an impossible task for Emery, especially with the confidence his side showed, despite the result against City. They will also be keeping a close eye of the Europa league spot (3rd), if they fail to get the desired results.
