In a dramatic night of Champions League football in Group B, English giants Manchester United have failed to secure a passage through to the knockout stages.
The Red Devils lost 3-2 away to Wolfsburg and would rue missing golden opportunities in the second half.
United’s defending left a lot to be desired, and in truth, after collecting just eight points from a group in which they were clear favourites they got what they deserved for a poor campaign.
Simply put, two wins from six group games is embarrassing for a club of United’s calibre.
Manager Louis van Gaal has been heavily criticised for the lacklustre playing style his side have portrayed, despite picking up results domestically.
Make no mistake, the Dutch tactician will come under intense scrutiny for this failure and the calls for his sacking from the supporter base will only grow louder.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to United crashing out of the Champions League:
Carrick for Bastian & Powell on for Mata. Hell Europa league. That’s all folks #MUFC

Most exciting #mufc group stage game since Basel at home in 2011. Second-half substitutions from Van Gaal made little sense. — Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) December 8, 2015
United had the easiest group of all the English teams, we had it in our own hands. No excuses. Absolutely shocking! #MUFC

Not much to say about #MUFC, criticism is quite obvious. No clear gameplan or tactical improvement, lots of money spent and little return…

Poor old #MUFC. Finally remember how to score only to simultaneously forget how to defend.

To be fair though if you can’t beat PSV home or away you don’t deserve to go through at least we’ve created chances tonight though #MUFC — Andrew whyment (@andywhyment81) December 8, 2015

Fact of the matter is, this has been coming for some time. #MUFC have been let off the hook many times this season. Wolfsburg a quality side
