Navas leading from the back

The Costa Rican international has more than stepped out of the shadows of the now Porto goalkeeper and Madrid legend Iker Casillas. When thinking of a word to describe the stoic custodian, defiant comes to mind, as the 28-year-old stops every shot that so much enters his vicinity.

He made several key saves in what was an uncharacteristically sluggish start for the hosts. Indeed, what was most surprising was the succession of shots at the Real goal in a short space of time during the opening 15 minutes of the first-half.

Navas is setting the example and leading the way forward for Rafa Benitez’s men.

Opponents keep creating chances

While the Real strike force is star-studded, the defence currently seems to be lacking in some areas. Benitez has, in recent weeks, insisted that his backline has improved, but quite frankly opponents are still creating opportunities and more so, are close to scoring if it was not for the heroics of Navas.

Levante had 15 opportunities in the game, with five of those being on target.

A gap is clearly forming due to the side’s attacking nature and it is indeed being exploited for all it is worth. Scoring goals is one thing, but if you are continually or coming close to conceding them, it really does even out.

No attacking line in the world would be able to counteract a bad goal deficit.
