Reigning Champions League trophy holders Barcelona cruised into the knockout stages of the competition with a dominant 6-1 victory over AS Roma.

Luis Suarez continued his sensational form by scoring twice, taking his tally for the season to 17 including 14 in his last 12 matches, also creating two goals for Lionel Messi, who started his first match in two months. Further goals from Gerard Pique and Adriano saw Barca race into a 6-0 lead after 77 minutes, before Edin Dzeko scored an injury time consolation.

Roma manager Rudi Garcia admitted his side were lucky to only lose by five goals, as Neymar missed a second-half penalty – although Adriano tapped in the follow-up – and the hosts dominated throughout, boasting an impressive 71% of possession and 19 shots at goal.

The only good news for the Giallorossi was that the draw between Leverkusen and BATE Borisov means the Italian side will progress to the knockout stages if they beat BATE in their final group game.
