Atletico Madrid’s first match in Melbourne saw them come away with a typical 1-0 win over Tottenham tonight.

The crowd of 42,107 at the MCG didn’t get their Fernando Torres goal, but Atleti’s other big gun Diego Godin got on the scoresheet after a set piece. From there, the Spanish side were able to shut out their English opponents, thanks largely to the brilliant work from Jan Oblak in goal.

The end result sees Tottenham winless from their two matches in Melbourne, while Atleti will now prepare to take on the Melbourne Victory on Sunday in Geelong. Who were the three top performers from the final match at the MCG in this year’s International Champions Cup?

Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) – Unsurprisingly, Atletico Madrid’s goalkeeper was the top performer on the night and was the difference in the game. After his side were saved by the woodwork twice in the first half, Oblak stepped up to the plate to provide two world class saves to firstly deny Ryan Mason and then Vincent Janssen in a matter of minutes, and was acknowledged as the official man of the match following the win.

Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid) – Mr. Reliable for Atleti did it again, with a strong defensive showing as well as being a typical threat from the set piece to open the scoring late in the first half. Aside from a brief spell in the second half where Oblak stood tall, a clean sheet, his ability to stand tall in defence and the match-winning goal capped off a solid opening game of the new campaign for the Uruguayan.

Vincent Janssen (Tottenham Hotspur) – Janssen had a much better performance in his second match for Tottenham, compared to his disappointing first up display against Juventus earlier in the week. The Spurs signing was much sharper and more influential against Atleti, feeding off the service particularly early from the classy Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela. Janssen was denied a place on the scoresheet only by the excellent Oblak, with his second half free kick goal-bound before being tipped behind for a corner.
