Stoke defence

Aside from the heroics of Butland, another key reason Stoke were able to keep Newcastle at bay were the defensive displays from Ryan Shawcross and Philipp Wollscheid. Whilst the Magpies main danger man Mitrovic appeared to cause the defensive duo some problems in the first half, they marshaled the Serbian striker much better in the second half and he cut an increasingly frustrated figure. Between the centre backs, they won all three of their aerial duals against Mitrovic, something which the Serb prides himself on.

Newcastle’s need for wingers

In the last few weeks including today, Newcastle have lined up with Sissoko and Wijnaldum on the wings. Both of these players are undoubtedly most suited to occupying the middle of the park; both were signed as central midfielders. Their impact against Stoke was limited as they only attempted three crosses between them – none of which were completed. Perhaps it might be time for Florian Thauvin to be given another chance.
