Brendan Rodgers can rest easy for the moment after his Liverpool side ended a difficult week with a 3-2 victory against the lowly Aston Villa at Anfield to record their third win in the English Premier League.

The Reds could not have gotten-off to a better start, as stand-in captain James Milner got the ball rolling with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, following on from a sharp pass by Phillipe Coutinho in what was basically the first attack of the match.

The Claret and Blue struggled to get involved throughout the first-half as Liverpool dominated and they doubled their lead through a sublime finish from Daniel Sturridge. However, the Villans pegged one back through Rudy Gestede, who replaced the injured Gary Agbonlahor in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI.

That fight back was extinguished by another Sturridge finish after some beautiful link-up play with Coutinho, however, it was reignited by Gestede once more, this time the towering forward produced a powerful header from point black range. Liverpool regrouped and saw out the remainder of the fixture rather comfortably.
