Socceroos star and QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo speaks to Outside90 about how he’s settling in at Loftus Road, playing under the tutelage of Chris Ramsey and playing in a more demanding role.
The Socceroos’ playmaker, fresh from his Asian Cup success and a dream move to Queens Park Rangers this summer, goes in depth about his footballing journey and what the future holds.
Luongo is adamant that there’s been a major change in his game since leaving League One outfit Swindon Town, and he’s relishing the added responsibility.
“Some games there’s a call for different structures in the team, certainly with away games that aren’t as easy anymore compared to League One,” Luongo said.
“Now, I have to be more defensive and at times need to play the ball a bit longer and stretch the pitch rather than having a tiki-taka game.”
When asked whether it was tougher mentally or physically to play professional football, the 22-year-old gave an unequivocal answer.
“Mentally, definitely. I think getting there in the first place is really difficult and I know loads of boys back in Australia and even here in England who have all the attributes technically to play at a professional level, but getting there is difficult with the sacrifices you have to make,” Luongo said.
“Once you are professional all the pressures that come with the job is a whole new ball game.”
