Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is desperate to put last season’s woes behind him.

The midfielder, who took over the captaincy role from Steven Gerrard last season, has revealed he was playing unfit during the 2015-16 season.

The former Sunderland player suffered a raft of injuries and suffered a significant loss of form, which saw him appear just 17 times in the Premier League last term.

The 26-year-old admitted he was playing through the pain barrier during matches.

“Last year was up and down. I was playing games when I wasn’t 100% and mentally that isn’t great,” Henderson told the Telegraph.

Fully fit again and determined to vindicate his appointment as Liverpool skipper, Henderson believes he’s overcome his problems and his best form lies ahead.

“Mentally I am in a different place and I think you can see that in performances,” he said.

People will look at last season and question whether I should have played at all with my injuries, but that is just the way I am.”

Henderson has started all three Premier League games this season, filling the void left by Emre Can in a defensive midfield role.
