Full-backs key to Mancini’s system
Changing the formation around from 4-3-1-2 to 4-3-2-1, a similar amount of effort was needed from both Davide Santon and Alex Telles to aid the side in both attack and defence. Both relatively resolute defensively, the two full-backs also contributed heavily in creating chances for Inter and often stretched the play by providing options out wide.
It was Santon’s cross that saw Kondogbia hit a half-volley over the bar from six yards out, while Telles drew a save from Rafael in the first half as well as providing the assist that led to Melo’s goal with a teasing delivery from a corner.
With Martín Montoya arriving on loan from FC Barcelona and Juan Jesus turning in some commanding performances prior to his injury in the Milan derby, the first team role of the two players was not guaranteed. However with Santon finding a new level to his game that has not been seen since his early days at Newcastle United and Telles beginning to find his feet in Serie A, it appears the pair could become vital figures under Mancini this term.
