Inter still some way off a title challenge

Regardless of the fact that Inter maintain a 100% record five games into the Serie A season and stand alone as the only side to boast that this campaign, there is still a feeling that much needs to be addressed in order for the Nerazzurri to become a dominant force in the league once more.

Having scored just six goals in the opening five games and possessing a rather modest goal difference of +5 considering the position the side finds itself in, it is clear to see things are not working out in attack for Inter.

With last season’s joint-top-goalscorer, Mauro Icardi, only recently coming back from injury, this is understandable to an extent, however those observing the side’s style of play will realise that Mancini’s men appear to be performing without the fluidity and tempo needed in order to break down opposition defences.

Losing Mateo Kovacic and Hernanes, two of the more creative talents at Mancini’s disposal last term, has taken its toll on the squad and perhaps the manager will dip into the transfer market in January to acquire a more creative-minded midfielder to line up alongside the muscle that has been employed in the starting XI in Geoffrey Kondogbia and Melo.

Having said this, Inter do have five wins from five games and the three points each week is all that matters, so they deserve some praise. As well as this, the new-look defence Mancini has assembled appears to be functioning impressively, and as for the other areas of the squad, when the players begin to gel the team is going to be one intimidating unit. Though whether that will happen this season remains to be seen.

In 2013-14, Roma won their opening 10 games in extremely convincing fashion, with many tipping them to end Juve’s domestic dominance and claim the Scudetto. In the end, the Old Lady retained their title by 17 points, so caution is warranted and it is much too early to talk of a title for Inter.
