Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou says strong performances in their upcoming games against Tajikistan and Jordan will only prove how much depth there is in Australian football.

Postecoglou announced his 23-man squad for the games in Adelaide and Sydney today, excluding Ivan Franjic, Alex Wilkinson, Matt McKay and James Troisi.

“I don’t think any of them are in an age group where you can rule them out. Wilkinson has been fantastic for us for the past two years,” Postecoglou said.

“McKay and Troisi, I’ll be really pleased if we have two strong performances because then I’ll know picking squads from now on will become really tough.

“Every player will know they have to perform at their best to maintain their position in the squad because I’ve left out some very good players.”

Finals dream not over just yet for New Zealand’s football heartbeat

Big news for A-League players Alex Gersbach (Sydney FC) and Jason Geria (Melbourne Victory) who were also called up for the first time for Socceroos duty.

Postecoglou said he was eyeing them for a long time and they deserved the opportunity to represent their country.

“Jason and Alex are two very exciting young Australian talents developing in the A-League, they’re two guys we’ve been tracking for a very long time,”

“Playing positions in full back where we need more depth, we’ve been found a bit short in those areas in the past, it’s a perfect time to give them a chance I think.

“Bringing them in the squad and getting them integrated with the senior team and also if we can give them an opportunity.

“They’ve shown all the right potential so far, you still need exposure at this level and this is a great chance to do that.”
