Sam Allardyce has barely been the new England national coach for a day, but already his appointment to the job is dividing supporters.
The 61-year-old takes up one of international football’s most scrutinised positions, made even more difficult as the English sit in tatters following their disastrous Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland.
While Allardyce showed immediate enthusiasm since taking up the job of his dreams, the opinions of England fans have not echoed that sentiment. Many see the ex-Sunderland manager as lacking experience working with star players, claiming his tactics favour survival rather than deadly attacking.
On the other hand, some showed optimism over the FA’s decision, with Allardyce’s record of grit and determination an aspect which has been sorely lacking in the English side of recent years.
Here are the best reactions to come from Twitter following the announcement:
Hope Allardyce cuts this midfield crap. Two wingers and full backs who can cross and big man/little man combo Defoe/Carroll #OldSchool #442

I think @england are right to choose Allardyce, considering many english players plays regularly in mid/low table clubs in PL

It's either pick the gung-ho Englishman (Hodgson, Allardyce, McClaren) or the stoic foreigner (SGE, Capello), @Paul_Mariner Neither works!

@SkyFootball – Underwhelmed by Allardyce. A specialist in not winning things and sacked by second rate clubs. Perfect choice…

Sam Allardyce is going to be a BUST, @Paul_Mariner . Never coached superstars under immense pressure and his style is painfully boring.
