Tim Cahill says the future of the Socceroos will be bright come the day he is no longer needed in the national team.

Australia is cruising through the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers so far, defeating Tajikistan 7-0 last week in Adelaide and subsequently Jordan 5-1 in Sydney last night.

Given Cahill is now 36, it is not an unreasonable assumption to say he may not even play in the World Cup, but the ex-Everton legend said the team had the confidence to prevail.

“For me I just come in when called upon and take it camp after camp. People are trying to look for a successor, the thing it’s not about me,” Cahill said,

“You look at this team there’s goals coming from everywhere and the most important thing is I can help them.

“I try to help the younger guys become better players, people can see the rewards, if they put the ball in the box one in three players is going to get there.

“I said that to Robbie Kruse, ‘cross it and you’ll get yourself an assist’ and then he gets the reward as well as the team.

“Consistency is my game, professionalism and I’ve been consistent, 47 goals in 88 games, it’s not a fluke.”

With Ange Postecoglou’s well known philosophy about the depth and performance, the Socceroos have definitely walked the walked in that regard.

Albeit they have played relatively weaker oppositions, players all over the park were getting involved to attack and defend.

Postecoglou also touched on the progress the Socceroos have made in recent years.

“We’re growing as a team, 12 months ago people were saying ‘who’s going to score apart from Timmy’? Well Timmy’s still scoring, but we’re getting multiple goal scorers from all over the place,” Postecoglou said.

“People were really worried about rankings, seedings and who we were going to play. I don’t get it.

“Just watch what the team’s doing, it should tell you enough we’re not going to be worried about who we get in our group, and we’ve had some tough groups in every competition we’ve been in.”
