The Netherlands have failed to qualify for Euro 2016 after a 3-2 loss at home to Czech Republic.

Down 2-0 at half-time, Robin van Persie’s outrageous own goal to make it 3-0 rubbed salt into the wounds, despite two consolation goals for the home side.

Just four wins, one draw and five losses – an abysmal record for the Group A favourites sees the 14th ranked nation bow out in dismal fashion.

Oranje always faced an uphill battle against Czech Republic, who had already secured a passage to Euro 2016, having to rely on Iceland defeating Turkey and seek a route through to a playoff place.

It was not meant to be for a team that have capped off a miserable 15 months since their World Cup third place.
