Everton squandered a golden opportunity to get back to winning ways, passing up a host of chances to earn only a share of the spoils with battling Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The visitors dominated the opening stanza but come the half time whistle, they only had a goal to show for it through Romelu Lukaku against a Norwich side that, at the time, was insipid.

Yet again it was Gerard Deulofeu who teed up the Belgian, delivering an inch-perfect delivery that Lukaku duly met at the far post. He and Kone enjoyed considerable opportunity thereafter but they could not breach Declan Rudd’s goal.

Norwich, after a dismal opening half with minimal intensity, burst out of the blocks in the second period, looking a completely new team. They were rewarded for making the early running in the 48th minute as Wes Hoolihan bundled home a goalmouth scramble after a corner.

The Canaries completely wrestled back the momentum of the game and hardly allowed Everton a sniff after equalising. They could have – and really should have – snatched the lead in the 69th minute.

Only six yards out, Cameron Jerome blazed over the bar after being picked out from the right-hand side.

That miss, like many of Everton’s in the first 45, proved costly as the match ended all square with the draw a far better result for the Norfolk side than Roberto Martinez’s men.

For them it does not get any easier as league leaders Leicester City visit Goodison Park next week, while Norwich are back on the road against Manchester United.
