Manchester City managed a thrilling 2-1 victory as Yaya Toure’s late winner denied Bafetimbi Gomis’s equalizer in the last minutes of Saturday’s clash at the Etihad.

The Citizens were in a poor form prior to the match, winning only once in the previous four games. Manuel Pellegrini will be satisfied with the three points earned during stoppage time though, his team completing a perfect week, after securing first place in the Champions League group stage with a 4-2 win against Borussia Monchengladbach. Top of the table once more, they did not impress against Swans, yet the victory could help the squad finding the right form in the following weeks.

The Swans sent Garry Monk out the exit door this past Wednesday, after winning once in 11 matches and earning a single point in the last five games. Alan Curtis was in the dugout as the caretaker manager against the Sky Blues and his starting XI surprised many, with three attacking-minded players but no real striker. Andre Ayew, Wayne Routledge and Gylfi Sigurdsson were upfront, causing lots of problems for the opposition’s defense.

New energy despite tough loss

Right from the start it was easy to spot new energy in Swansea’s starting XI. Monk’s sacking proved to bring more eagerness, but it failed to make an immediate impact on the result. The visitors were the team often dictating the game and though they played wide, City could not exactly exploit that width. Most of the attacks came from the right-hand side, where Routledge was quite vibrant. The home team struggled with the through balls Swans were often using to generate chances, which is also how Gomis managed to score the equalizer.
