Bayer Leverkusen thumped Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0 at the BayArena on Saturday, with a brace from Stefan Kiessling and a hat-trick from Javier Hernandez more than enough to secure an astonishing victory against the in-form outfit.

It was 1-0 at the break, but the demolition that followed shocked an abundance of fans. The home side scored four goals in 15 minutes during the second half to storm to a massive victory. Leverkusen were clinical, seeing six of 14 total shots on goal find the target with a return of five goals.

It is Gladbach’s first domestic defeat under new manager André Schubert. The result sees Roger Schmidt and his men climb to sixth with 24 points, just two behind fifth-placed Gladbach and fourth-placed VfL Wolfsburg.

Bayer Leverkusen

Bernd Leno – 7: Interveined with some important interceptions. Aside from that he was not tested too much.

Roberto Hilbert – 6: Firm in defence as well as attack. Produced key interceptions and his wonderful cross lead to Kiessling’s opener.

Jonathan Tah – 7: Strong defensive display and still yet to miss a single second of action. Very consistent.

Omer Toprak – 7: Settling in nicely since his return to centre-back. Leverkusen have now won six matches when Toprak has played at centre-back.

Wendell – 7: Excellent performance, was brilliant in defence and surged forward in patches of the showdown.

Karim Bellarabi – 7: Looked vibrant, played a part in the build-up of the first goal and assisted one. His shot execution was poor, could have hit a treble himself on another day.

Christoph Kramer – 7: Did not stop running, contributing to the attack and defence.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 7.5: Came close to finding the net in the first half when he struck the post abruptly from a free kick on a tight angle. He also mustered up an assist for Kiessling’s second.

Kevin Kampl – 7.5: Quality distribution as always. Often pulled the strings in midfield.

Stefan Kiessling – 9: Scored the opening goal of the match with a composed header, his first goal since the first day of the season. Managed to double his tally in the second half while also engineering two delightful assists for his fellow frontman.

Javier Hernandez – 9.5: The hat-trick hero secured his treble in the space of 13 minutes. Clinical display.
