Emre Can is not a defender
Simply put, Can is not a defender. The German international endured a hap-hazard first-half performance which included a petulant yellow card, sloppy passes and a misdirected clearance that played a key part in Lukaku’s equalising goal minutes before half-time.
Joe Gomez would be an adequate replacement for Can if Rodgers is desperate to keep persisting with the three central defenders in a back five. The 18-year-old summer signing from Charlton Athletic remains a raw prospect, but has played the best football of his fledgling career in a central defensive position.
Rodgers seems to do everything within his powers to squeeze Can into his starting XI, but he may be better served experimenting with Gomez in a central position.
