This was one of the tensest and bitterly fought derbies in the history of the fixture. Nani’s early goal had put United ahead before David Silva’s effort levelled the scores for the visitors. The two teams appeared evenly matched and the game looked headed for a draw before what can only be described as one of the most stunning goals in Premier League history decided the result.
Wayne Rooney’s superb bicycle kick, hitting the ball at its highest point and sending it straight into the top corner, is not only the greatest goal in derby history but arguably one of the greatest goals in the Premier League or English football history. It was a simply breathtaking goal from the English striker and one which deserves to live long in the memory of all football fans. There are many ways to seal a 2-1 win in a derby but none will be finer than Rooney’s effort that afternoon at Old Trafford.
