Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3, December 2012

City and United met again for the first time since City had usurped United and claimed their first Premier League title on goal difference, thanks in no small part to their thumping win at Old Trafford that season.

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie had been heavily courted by both clubs before eventually settling on the red half of Manchester. It was the Dutch striker who was to make all the difference on his derby debut. An early Wayne Rooney double had put United two goals to the good, before goals from Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta levelled the score. It took a curling, 92nd minute free kick from Van Persie, aided in no small part by a deflection off the outstretched leg of Samir Nasri, to secure a 3-2 United victory. The win drove United on and eventually led to Alex Ferguson’s last and United’s most recent Premier League triumph.
