Muscat’s savage tackle
In just the third Melbourne Derby, the animosity between the two clubs was already clear, with 10 cards issued and Victory captain Kevin Muscat embroiled in an incident fans would not soon forget.
The score was tied at 2-2 late in the game, and tensions boiled over. A horror tackle from Muscat on Heart’s Adrian Zahra ended the 20-year-old’s season, and enraged the football community.
Already notorious in Europe following stints with Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton, Rangers and Millwall, Muscat met condemnation at home and overseas, and was later suspended for eight weeks.
The tackle and resultant suspension are still spoken about today, often as a benchmark for other incidents and suspensions in the A-League.
