The biggest derby yet

After four years and 12 meetings, the ledger was even with four wins each to Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart (now City).

A dominant 2014-15 campaign from Victory saw the ledger tip in favour of the more established club, but it did not keep 50,971 fans from packing into Etihad Stadium to witness the first finals meeting between the sides, with a grand final place on the line.

Billed as the biggest Melbourne Derby yet, the pulsating crowd witnessed a demolition, with Besart Berisha, Kosta Barbarouses and Archie Thompson sealing Victory’s passage to the championship game.
The on-field display may not have lived up to expectations, particularly for Melbourne City fans, but the size of the crowd and the significance of the occasion led to considerable interest around the city, a promising sign for this fixture.

Honourable mentions: Robbie Kruse’s brace in 2010-11, Archie Thompson’s chipped goal in 2011-12 to win in injury time, Erik Paartalu’s late winner in the second derby of 2014-15.
