Heart beats strong in rare thrashing

The summer of 2013-14 was not a fruitful one for Melbourne Heart, for the most part. After 12 winless matches to start the season, manager John Aloisi was sacked and replaced by John van’t Schip, the Dutchman returning for his second stint in charge of the club.

By the time the season’s third derby rolled around, Heart’s fortunes had taken a positive turn. With four wins in a row, Heart were well placed to record their first win over Melbourne Victory for the season, but nobody could have foreseen what was to come.

Van’t Schip’s boys ran riot against their bitter rivals, inflicting a record margin of four goals that stands to this date. Orlando Engelaar opened their account early, before Mate Dugandzic added a second against his former club with a cross that floated into the top corner of the net.

Down to 10 men after Nick Ansell saw red for a tug on David Williams’ jersey, Victory’s nightmare was not over. Williams made it three in the 83rd minute, before substitute Harry Kewell thrashed a long-range strike past Lawrence Thomas to complete the rout.
