Brilliant Berisha makes his mark

The first derby of 2014-15 saw Melbourne’s younger side take the field in sky blue for the first time, following its acquisition by the City Football Group and subsequent rebrand earlier in the year.

After years of struggle, the side was now backed by incredible financial clout and a world-famous brand, and the players were keen for that prestige to transfer onto the pitch.

City hit the front twice in the first half through Rob Wielaert and Jason Hoffman, cancelling out a 23rd-minute equaliser from Archie Thompson, and looked set to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Enter Besart Berisha, former Golden Boot winner with Brisbane Roar and Victory’s marquee signing. In just his third appearance in navy blue, the Albanian striker tied the game in injury time, before completing a sensational hat-trick in the second half to lift his new club to a 5-2 win in front of 43,729 fans.
