Queens Park Rangers were held to a goalless draw for the first time this season as they hosted Sheffield Wednesday at Loftus Road.

Clear-cut chances were rare for both sides as they struggled to make good on an even share of possession. Rangers made several changes to the team that lost last weekend at Birmingham, Daniel Tozser, Massimo Luongo and Clint Hill were introduced, while James Perch, Karl Henry and Leroy Fer were resigned to the bench.

Though the match ended scoreless, there were several key talking points to be addressed.

Squad selection

Even the most impartial of viewer would have something to say about Chris Ramsey’s squad selection and choice of tactics this week. Apart from Alex Smithies (goalkeeper) and Gabriele Angella (centre-back), the QPR bench was almost a defensive-midfielders’ convention. Not including a No.9 on bench is almost unfathomable, especially when you plan to take-off your starting striker during the game. What is more, Rangers have two strikers available in the form of Seb Polter and the recently recalled Tyler Blackwood. Polter made his feelings about the selection known with an outburst on twitter, though it was quickly deleted.

Dutchman Leroy Fer replaced Jay Emmanuel Thomas near the 70 minute mark, leaving the hosts with no designated front man. The change did, however, force Rangers to find another way into Wednesday’s final third, though ultimately to no avail.
