Tottenham’s unbeaten run comes to an end

Although inevitable that Tottenham would eventually lose for the first time since their opening day defeat to Manchester United, no one would have expected that it would be to an erratic Newcastle. After their midweek European win against Monaco, it was perhaps understandable that their tiredness played a part in their defeat. After Eric Dier’s first half header, it looked like normal service resumed for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, but the Magpies had other ideas. After a drop in performance level in the second half, substitutes Aleksander Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez capitalised on two Spurs mistakes to condemn the London club to its first defeat in 15 games.

Klopp’s antic not necessary

After securing a satisfactory point against West Brom, it was something of a shock to see Jürgen Klopp and his players go over to the Kop holding hands and thanking the crowd, a custom which is quite normal in Germany after a win, draw or loss but unusual in England. Many critics were confused as to why Klopp went about approaching the fans with his players as it was only a draw against a team in the bottom half of the table which, in truth, could have been much worse. For one, the fans will always be behind their team and it is Klopp’s job to ensure that his team wins against opposition of this type. The move may have been a motivational ploy but for Klopp, his team’s poor performances at home must be addressed so the results can come with it.
