Outside90’s Yannick Forde analyses the big talking points from matchday 16 of the Premier League.

Manchester City snatch late win

After being frustrated by a reinvigorated Swansea side for the best part of 90 minutes, Manchester City’s champion qualities came to the fore as they went right back up the pitch and scored the winner. The scorer, Yaya Toure, can seemingly move up a gear when he wants and so it proved. With the trip to the Emirates next to play a rampant Arsenal, Manuel Pellegrini will know he and his men have got to improve. With a kinder draw in the Champions League round of 16 than they are accustomed too, it rounded off a good week for the Citizens.

Swansea defeat at City underlines what they lack

Although the post-Garry Monk era started off on the wrong foot for Swansea City and their caretaker manager Alan Curtis, there was reason to be optimistic with their performance at the Etihad. With just six points in their last 10 games, a run which ultimately led to Monk’s demise, Swansea actually performed admirably. For long periods in the match, it was the home side that was pegged back by a performance reminiscent of so many last season. When their equaliser came through Bafetimbi Gomis, it was no more than they deserved. However, they naively succumbed at the death to Yaya Toure’s strike. Despite the positives, the reality was that Swansea could have finished this game off in their favor much earlier. The lack of a top goalscorer was highlighted by Wilfred Bony scoring against his old club for which he filled that void – a void that is not filled adequately by Gomis.
