A perfect performance that’s still lacking adequate finishing

With 65% possession, 24 shots with 11 on target and a total of 695 passes with an accuracy of 84%, Atléti had one of their most impressive matches so far this season. Gala only mustered three shots with only one on target, a long range effort from Sneijder which was comfortably saved by Oblak. Apart from that, Oblak alongside Godín and José Giménez were rarely troubled, and Gámez and Filipe Luís were predominantly making runs and threatening with their crosses throughout the 90 minutes.

Everything was perfect except for the finishing which must be a huge concern for Simeone. Eleven shots on target yet Atléti were only able to score two goals, with one seemingly offside. With Atléti now advanced to the next stage of the competition, Simeone will hope his side start becoming more efficient in front of goals as the likes of Gabi, Tiago and Koke are creating a handful of chances that are currently not being put away.

Jesús Gámez making a claim for a continuous run in the starting XI

When Juanfran went out injured, Simeone and Atléti supporters weren’t worried, as they have an equally reliable right back in Gámez. Both players are solid defensively, experienced and love to make attacking runs. Gámez has always been unlucky to see himself on the sidelines as when he does play he has always been impressive.

Tonight was no exception and the Spaniard was dangerous going forward, most notably crossing in a great ball for Koke only to be denied by a quick save from Muslera. Juanfran was on the bench for the match as he looks to ease back into the starting XI, however, the form Gámez is currently in means Simeone will have to decide whether to keep the in form Gámez or go back to his trusted right-back Juanfran.
