The Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of Aritz Borda from Deportivo Alavés on a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old central defender will provide cover for the departed Alberto in Tony Popovic’s setup, bringing years of experience across Spanish football.

“I am super excited to join the Wanderers for the next two seasons,” said Borda.

“This will be a new adventure for me and I’m sure I will enjoy it. I am coming to give my best for the team and help them with the Championship.”

Borda will enter the A-League fray having been apart of the Deportivo Alavés side that topped the Spanish Segunda division in 2015-16, in turn securing promotion to the top-flight.

Western Sydney CEO John Tsatsimas expects him to bring structure and organisation to the squad’s defence in the coming season.

“From what our coaching staff have seen of Aritz they are very confident he will be a formidable presence in our backline this season,” said Tsatsimas.

“He has played in Asia previously and has had good experience in European leagues so we expect he will fit into our structure well.”
