Uncharacteristic fumble from Lydia Williams gives Brisbane Roar the ascendancy

After a successful World Cup campaign with the Matildas only months ago, no one would have pegged experienced custodian Lydia Williams to produce a howler in Round 1. Yet, a weak volley from Ruth Blackburn was enough to evade the hands of Williams and dribble into the net, putting the Roar firmly in front with a 2-0 lead. The goal gave a boost of confidence to Belinda Wilson’s side, comfortably controlling the first period.

Known for her solidity in goals, Williams will no doubt be determined to avoid a repeat of her mistake for the rest of the campaign.

Canberra United field depleted side

Canberra United started their W-League Champions title defence with several key players missing. International signings Jodie Taylor, Veronica Perez and Caitlin Munoz were all absent from the starting line up. Although this allowed coach Rae Dower to afford some youngsters W-League experience, it goes without saying that the defending champions will be strengthened with the addition of their international stars.
