The defending champions once again crumbled on their home soil in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Southampton on Saturday, with manager Jose Mourinho stealing the limelight.

The loss was the Blues’ fourth in the Premier League this campaign, already more than what they suffered last season. It is hard to believe this team rampaged their way to the title so easily the last time around.

During the post-match interview, Sky Sports reporter Greg Whelan asked Mourinho what he had made of his side’s performance. Seven minutes later, he got his answer.

Mourinho went on to say that referees are “afraid” to give his side decisions and added that his players are “mentally” and “physically” down. It also appeared Mourinho was almost inviting the board and owner Roman Abramovich to sack him.

Throughout the entire seven-minute rant, Mourinho also failed to acknowledge what a great job Southampton did, and particularly Ronald Koeman, who set his team up brilliantly. Instead, the entire speech was aimed at the officials and the club.

But it is not the first time that Mourinho has given his post-game thoughts in one answer. In April last year, Sunderland ended Chelsea’s 77-game unbeaten home record under the Portuguese manager, and he responded in similar fashion by blaming the officiating, albeit not in seven minutes.

The defending champions are stuck on eight points after as many games, and since the Premier League’s inception, no team has managed to finish in the top four after such a start, let alone win the competition. In fact, the average finishing place is 14th, and although it is unlikely that Chelsea will finish in the bottom-half, the dethronement of the champions looks very likely.

So for his seven-minute rant, and fourth Premier League loss which has left Chelsea with eight points after as many games, Jose Mourinho is this week’s Villain of the Week.
