Newcastle United were on the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing at the hands Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday as pressure continues to mount on manager Steve McClaren.

The Magpies were deplorable in the defeat which saw them concede four first half goals after taking an early lead through Papiss Cisse.

The performance appeared to be one that lacked effort and raises the question over whether McClaren has lost the dressing room.

The loss has left Newcastle in 19th position and two points from safety. McClaren’ side also boast the equal-worst defensive record in the Premier League having shipped 30 goals in 14 games – a worrying statistic for any side and particularly those fighting for relegation.

The Magpies have suffered defeat on eight separate occasions in the Premier League and are already out of the Capital One Cup, making it a difficult period for all associated with the club.

Newcastle United entertain a rejuvenated Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday. McClaren will be hoping his players can lift and produce a performance that is at least competitive.

If a repeat performance is to follow, it could very well spell the end of McClaren’s tenure at St James’ Park.

It was a performance that was crying out for effort and for that McClaren is Outside90’s villain of the week.
