Melbourne Victory will be buoyed by the news that Archie Thompson’s suspected career-ending injury is not as worst feared.

The veteran striker underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee yesterday, following the injury he sustained in Victory’s FFA Cup quarter-final win over Adelaide United on Tuesday night.

After further scans it has been determined that Thompson will need eight to 12 weeks to recover from the medial ligament injury.

The 36-year-old is said to be in ‘good spirits’, according to the club and will commence rehabilitation immediately.

The Australian football world will feel relieved that Thompson, an ever-present figure of the A-League since its inception in 2005, can recover and make a return for the upcoming 2015-16 campaign.

Thompson has played 229 games for the club, scoring 95 goals.
