Western Sydney are in the middle of a Premiers’ Plate race that will come down to the wire, yet there is one other item still to be checked off on their coach’s 2015-16 list.
On Sunday the Wanderers will travel across the ditch to face the Wellington Phoenix and Tony Popovic wants his men to make up for their last meeting against the New Zealanders.
Back in February the Phoenix came to Wanderland and recorded a resounding 5-2 win, something that Popovic admitted still plagued his thoughts even at this late stage of the season.
“That’s certainly still on my mind…we lost 5-2 at home,” said the Wanderers coach to media earlier today.
“It wasn’t a great day in front of our home fans, the players certainly responded well after that in terms of performances and results, [but] that’s one that should be a motivating factor alone.”

As the A-League’s top four are all still in contention to take out the top spot honour, Popovic iterated that a dedicated showing is needed to give Western Sydney a chance to end the weekend with silverware.
“We can only control what we can, we still have to win a game of football on Sunday against a team that beat us 5-2 in our last outing.
“We’re very determined and focused to make sure that we put on a 95 minute performance, which we owe them.
“We have a sense of wanting to really show Wellington a real performance from the Wanderers…we let ourselves down in the last match.”
The Phoenix kick-off against Western Sydney at 3pm AEST on Sunday.
