Wales and Slovakia will clash in their first match of the 2016 European Championships at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, in what is considered by many to be the tournament’s most open and even group.

Two Underdog sides go head to head (the teams)

Wales make their first appearance at a major competition since the 1958 World Cup, while Slovakia mark their second time qualifying for an international tournament since a split from Czechoslovakia, following their 2010 FIFA World Cup showing.

The Dragons will be feeling the pressure, as they have not competed on such a stage in over five decades, while Slovakia will look to draw upon their experience in South Africa and their qualifying campaign as a source of inspiration.

These two will charge together into the unknown – a step taken in unison into new and exciting eras for both sides.

While the on-field action should provide plenty of intriguing sub-plots and drama, the battle of the dugout also highlights an underdog story of sorts, where two over-performers will clash and become the first managers from their national teams to martial their troops from the sidelines of an international European competition.

In this battle of two shrewd coaches that have led their respective teams to uncharted glory in long qualifying campaigns, the winner of this match can lay claim to the title of being the true ‘dark horse’ jockey.

Which star player will have the greatest impact on the match?

Gareth Bale or Marek Hamsik? Jonny Williams or Martin Skrtel? Aaron Ramsey or Kucka? There are some undisputable big names in both camps, and all of them will want to make an impact in this first group match.

Expect Bale and Hamsik to provide plenty of moments of pace and skill. While national team captains and centre-backs Williams and Skrtel will be expected to perform and lead by example, despite their inexperience at major international events.

Ramsey and Kucka will be at the heart of their respective sides, and their industrious play will be crucial to securing a result.
