Three key talking points – Newcastle Jets vs Central Coast Mariners

Scott Miller’s Newcastle Jets will look to continue their surprise start to 2015-16, hosting an unconvincing Central Coast Mariners this weekend.

Are Newcastle becoming too predictable

Newcastle have exceeded all expectations this season, pulling nine points from a possible 15 despite facing four of the top six sides from 2014-15. However, the majority of the Jets’ attacking force has come almost exclusively from the same three players – David Carney, Milos Trifunovic and Enver Alivodic. Although the trio may not have struggled in carrying the side so far this campaign, unless Newcastle can begin to produce a more dynamic attack, it seems only a matter of time before they hit a wall.

What role will the referee play?

Both Newcastle and Central Coast have benefited from the referee’s whistle this season, bagging seven goals from the set pieces between them – most notably the Mariners picking up two penalties against Perth Glory in their opening round win. With a derby clash often seeing an increase in fouls and set pieces, the referee could play a crucial role in the outcome of the clash.

How long can the Mariners’ ‘style over results’ approach last?

The Mariners have adopted an entirely different style this season, with coach Tony Walmsley even statingthat the side aims to play attractive attacking football at all costs – something their results have clearly demonstrated with just one win all season. Although fans have been patient with the Mariners results so far, a 3-1 loss to Sydney FC was a bitter blow for the proud club, if the side return home without points from another local derby patience will be wearing thin on the Central Coast.
