Three key talking points – Newcastle Jets vs Brisbane Roar

Newcastle Jets host table-toppers Brisbane Roar in Saturday’s early fixture.

What role will goalkeepers play?

Newcastle managed to steal a point in Adelaide last round almost entirely thanks to the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. Meanwhile, Brisbane’s deputy Jamie Young was lucky not to have single-handily given Melbourne City the win at Suncorp Stadium. With Newcastle struggling up front since their 4-2 win in round four, Young will be hoping he can avoid a similar performance, particularly if his counterpart can pull off another showstopping 90 minutes to defy the Roar’s rampant attack.

Brisbane vs “anti-football”

Last weekend Roar coach John Aloisi took the post-match press conference as a chance to slam his former club City and sides who play “anti-football” – referring to those who build success off of hard work and resolute defence as opposed to Brisbane’s more flamboyant style. If Aloisi had an issue with City’s approach in their 1-1 draw, then he looks set for another frustrating night on the sideline against a Newcastle side that has built their campaign entirely off a similar approach. So has Aloisi learnt from last week’s draw, or will he again be left fuming at an inability to overcome ‘anti-football’?

Is this just a Jets form slump or something more severe?

The problem with playing Newcastle’s style of football is it does not lend itself to teams with a lack of depth, or longevity over the season. Playing effectively on the back foot and with such hearty determination can often lead to player burnout in the midfield and defence, while up front, ‘go-to’ moves or players begin to become repetitive and easily targeted by opponents. With the Jets failing to bag a win in three outings, and resembling their 2014-15 selves while doing so, trouble could well be on the horizon for Scott Miller. Does the young coach have what it takes to re-inspire and invigorate his tiring team, or are the Jets on the verge of a dramatic slide down the ladder?
