Three key talking points – Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix

Melbourne City are looking for six straight wins as they face a Wellington side bolstered by their own upturn in form.

Will Wellington continue to trouble City?

Throughout the past few seasons, this fixture has been incredibly open and has included its fair share of shock results, even this one despite City’s impressive squad and the Nix’s low position on the table. In fact, Wellington have won two and drawn two of their last five regular season meetings with John van’t Schip’s men. The Phoenix will be bolstered by their upturn in form, having won 50% of their last six outings, giving Ernie Merrick’s men a real chance this Monday.

City aiming for 10 straight

After coping their share of criticism for inconsistent performances, Melbourne City have managed to string together a solid run of results, with this weekend’s clash against Wellington seeing them aim for four straight wins for just the second time in their history. A win or draw will see City go 10 games without a loss as they continue on the hunt for maiden silverware. However, they will have to do so without Aaron Mooy, who is still in camp with the Socceroos.

Another star signs with the Phoenix

If Wellington were not boosted by the news of Kosta Barbarouses’ return home to New Zealand next season, then the signature of Gui Finkler surely will have. Not only does the side now have a ready made star partnership in the two, but current players will have their confidence in coach Ernie Merrick’s vision solidified with players turning to him from current reigning champions Melbourne Victory. While it may not necessarily give the team a mental boost this round, it is a show of intent from Wellington.
