Sydney FC have announced Saturday’s derby against Western Sydney Wanderers has sold out for the fifth time in a row.

Sky Blues management is expecting a crowd of more than 40,000 with a crucial three points up for grabs. The Wanderers sit atop the table on 35 points while Sydney FC are sixth with 28.

Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata could not hide his delight at the news.

“It’s fantastic to see Saturday’s match sell out again,” he said.

“It’s testament to the popularity of the contest and the passion shared between both sets of fans that we’re able to set this record.

“People have obviously enjoyed the experience in the past and want to keep coming back for more.

“I hope Saturday will be another great occasion for football in this country and I can’t wait for kick off.”

The record Sydney Derby crowd to date was set in October 2014, when 41,213 fans packed Allianz Stadium to see Sydney FC defeat their red and black foes 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

That figure was an Allianz Stadium regular season record for a home and away crowd in any sport.

Sydney lead this season’s derby ledger 2-0, winning 1-0 at Allianz Stadium, followed by a 2-1 win at Wanderland.

Western Sydney have not beaten Sydney FC in the past six derbies, with the Sky Blues winning five of those.
